O royal swan of Manasa, the lake that is the mind, take your stand within the mansion that is the feet of Girija’s lord, and there, always and in privacy, sport as you please in the company of the brides who are devotion. The whole of that mansion is strewn with the splendour of the lustre of his toenails, it has been washed by rising streams of nectar, and though washed it keeps the loveliness of ruby red, and flocks of swans have come and made it their resort.
Context and commentary on verse 46
The previous verse called the mind the crest-jewel of birds and told it to leave its vain wandering and dwell in the nest at Shankara’s lotus feet. This verse carries the same instruction further, but the bird is now a royal swan and the nest has become a palace. The parts of the picture are plain. The swan is the mind, the mansion is Shiva’s feet, the brides are devotion, and the flocks of swans already living there are those who have made those feet their whole support.
A saudha is a whitewashed mansion. The poet says that light lies spread over its floor, and that light is the lustre of the row of Shiva’s ten toenails. Comparing nails to little moons is a convention of Sanskrit poetry, and the comparison carries the next phrase with it, since tradition holds the moon to be the seat of nectar. So along with that moonlight a flow of nectar also rises and washes the floor. Many take it that the Ganga, which rises from Shiva’s own foot, is remembered here as well.
There is a small turn of wit in the second line, in the words ‘adhautepi ca padmaragalalite’. Washing usually takes the colour away. Here, however much nectar washes it, the red does not go, because that red is not a colour laid on from outside but the ruby’s own. The same picture states the natural redness of the soles of the feet. The two words ‘api ca’ point to exactly this contrast.
The word hamsa sounds two ways. On one side it is the bird of the lake, on the other it is the name given in Vedanta to the individual soul and to the renouncer, and the word paramahamsa comes from it. In the same way ‘manasa’ is both lake Manasa in the Himalaya and the mind. Behind the address lies the belief that royal swans make their way to lake Manasa. Many take devotion’s being named in the plural, as a throng of brides, to mean the many forms devotion takes, and behind it there remains the natural sight of a swan at play with its mates on a pool.
There is a fine hint in this picture of a house. The verse asks not for a vision but for residence. ‘Sthitva’ means having stood, having settled. ‘Rahasi’ means in the inner room where no one else is, that is, not in a place where the mind must display its devotion to others. In verse 48 this same swan returns, and there it is shown a lake. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today
In the summer everyone comes to the shade of the big tree at the centre of a village. One person sets down a bag and sits, another drinks water and moves on. It is the same shade, but what the one who sits receives is different.
Our relation with the good places we know is much the same. What we saw once stays in memory, but only what we stayed with for a while changes us. That is what this verse asks for too: not a visit but a dwelling.
