Context and commentary on verse 49
The creeper of devotion that appeared in the garden of verse 47 is the whole subject here. Taking the picture apart: the creeper is devotion, the basin in which its root stands is Shiva’s feet, the water held in that basin is the nectar of bliss, the stick it leans on is steadiness, the spreading branches are the many forms devotion takes, the high trellis it climbs is the mind, and what feeds its growth is good deeds.
The word ‘alavala’ is the finest detail in this verse. After a sapling is planted, a ridge of earth is raised round it so that water stands and does not run off, and that ring is the basin. So Shiva’s feet here are not mere ground but a place that holds water. The suggestion of the picture is that the water the creeper needs is always standing in the basin.
A creeper has no trunk of its own, so without support it does not rise. ‘Upaghna’ is the prop it leans on, the stake of the frame, and the verse says that stake is steadiness. Intensity alone will not do for devotion, then. It needs the firmness of staying in one place as well. This looks like a small remark, but its weight appears when we recall that the three previous verses were all about the mind’s wandering.
About the sense of the word ‘kayamana’ something should be said honestly. Many take it as the trellis or bower over which a creeper is trained, and joined with ‘patali’ that sense, the high trellis of the mind, fits the picture best. The word is rare in poetry, though, and the possibility that other editions carry a different reading cannot be set aside.
There is only one verb in the verse, ‘bhavatu’, let it be, in the optative. So this is not a description but a prayer. The poet does not say which fruit he asks for, only ‘abhishta phala’, the fruit that is wished. Read beside the earlier verses of this hymn, many take that wished-for fruit to be Shiva himself. ‘Nishkalmasha’ carries both the picture of a creeper untouched by pests and the sense of a devotion without pretence. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter.

For life today
Those learning to walk again after major surgery need a stick or a walker in the first days. How long, and which support, is decided case by case by those giving the treatment. It is during the days of support that the leg gathers its strength.
Support is not a mark of weakness but a stage of growth. In our own resolves too, if we first fix small supports, a routine, a fixed hour, the company of one other person, the rest slowly begins to climb.
