ಶ್ಲೋಕ 50ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 50
The verses so far showed the mind a nest, a mansion, a garden, a lake and a creeper. This one names a place for the first time. Srigiri is Srisailam, the shrine on a hill by the river Krishna in what is now Andhra Pradesh. The Shiva there is Mallikarjuna, and this linga is one of the twelve jyotirlingas. Our page on the Dvadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram, which names all twelve, is already on this site. Tradition holds that Shankara composed the Shivananda Lahari at Srisailam, and the next verse too speaks of the lord who dwells on Srishaila.
Mallika is the jasmine. Standing on that name, the poet runs the whole verse in two senses at once. On one side it describes a jasmine in the evening, on the other the worship of the linga in the shrine. The jasmine opens at dusk, and dusk is also one of the hours of worship. Jasmine is worn at the top of the ear, and shruti means both the ear and the Veda, so the same phrase says that this linga is established in the Upanishads, the head of the Veda. Bees circle a flower lovingly, and devotees the linga.
The other qualifiers serve both sides in the same way. ‘Sadvasana’ is the flower’s fragrance and a good disposition. ‘Guna’ is a virtue and also a string, so as flowers show on the thread of a garland, the linga shows itself by its qualities. ‘Sumanas’ means a flower, a god and a person of good mind, all three, so with that single word the verse says worship with all flowers, worship by all the gods and worship by all good people. ‘Bhogi’ is the snake that coils, so bhogindra is the serpent king, the ornament at Shiva’s throat. And ‘asakrit’ indicates that this worship is not one occasion’s excitement but a daily order.
It is as well to explain the word linga without coyness. Linga means a mark, a sign. It is the sign that indicates the formless Shiva, which is why it carries no detail of face or limbs. In the shrine the linga stands on a pitha, and tradition explains the two together as Shiva and Shakti, the union of the male and female principles that creation requires. The Shaiva tradition has never treated this as something to be hidden out of embarrassment. The last word of the verse is itself a word of embrace, ‘shivalingitam’, which means both embraced by Shiva and embraced by Shivā, that is Parvati, and in which the word linga sounds again.
The goddess at Srisailam is called Bhramarambika, the mother who took the form of a bee, as the story of that shrine tells. Some therefore hear an echo of that name in the word ‘bhramara’ here, though the verse does not name her directly. There are those who take the name Mallikarjuna as the jasmine and the white arjuna tree, and others who read the pair as Mallika for Parvati and Arjuna for Shiva. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
At six in the evening those sitting in front of a flower shop are stringing jasmine on a thread. The buds open only after they are sold, in somebody else’s house. The scent stays on the hands of those who strung them.
Many of the things we do in a day are like this. Their fruit opens in another house, and what stays on our hands is the scent. That scent need not be thought a small thing.
