ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O lord, to fill my own belly, greedy for money and aiming at everyone, I wander about uselessly every day, and I do not know how your service is to be done. O Sharva, by the force of merit from another birth of mine come to ripeness, you do stand within everything. O Pashupati, on that ground at least, I am one you must protect.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 57ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 57
The two verses before this were strings of salutation. Here the manner changes at once. There is no image and no ornament, only a plain admission. Self reproach of this kind is a familiar mode in hymns. Its strength lies not in exaggeration but in exactness.
The words chosen are worth noticing. Svodarapurana, the filling of one’s own belly, is deliberately an unlovely phrase. In sakalan uddishya, aiming at everyone, it is the word everyone that stings. Paryatana is going about, and elsewhere it is a pilgrim’s word, while here the same going about is waste. Na jane, I do not know, carries the suggestion that service too is a skill one has to learn.
The turn comes in the third line. Finding no ground on his own side to plead from, the poet takes the one thing that is not his doing, the fact that you already stand within everything. The two words tena va carry the weight of the whole verse, meaning if for no other reason then at least for that. The argument runs thus: since you are inside me, keeping me is your own concern.
In janmantarapunyapaka, paka is ripening, the coming to readiness of what has been cooking. It is the word tradition uses for karma yielding its fruit when its time arrives. Besides, rakshaniyah asmi is not the form of a request but of a settled claim, I am one who must be protected. That so bold a sentence comes from a man who is begging is what gives the verse its flavour. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
For someone bent over the machine all day in a tailor’s shop, the day is counted in measurements taken, seams sewn and payments received. By evening it is that same reckoning which remains.
Our days are counted in much the same way, and there is nothing wrong in it, since filling the stomach is everyone’s work. The verse leaves a question standing, though: how much of the day is left over outside that reckoning.
