As the swan longs for the lotus wood, as the chataka longs for the dark rain cloud, as the koka longs for the red lotus it loves, as the chakora longs for the moon day after day, so, O Pashupati, O lord, O husband of Gauri, does my mind long for the pair of your lotus feet, which are to be sought by the path of awareness and which give the happiness of kaivalya.
Context and commentary on verse 59
This verse sets four longings in a row and then names a fifth. Each is a standing pair in Sanskrit poetry: the swan and the lotus pool, the chataka and the rain cloud, the koka and the red lotus, the chakora and the moon. Poetic convention holds that the chataka drinks only the drops that fall from the cloud, and that the chakora feeds on moonlight. These are not facts of ornithology but agreements of poetry.
The word kokanadapriyam is read in two ways. Kokanada is the red lotus, so the direct sense is that the koka longs for the red lotus it loves. Others read kokanadapriya as the sun, the beloved of the red lotus. This second sense fits well with the familiar picture of the chakravaka pair parted all night and waiting for daybreak. Both are possible, and we have taken the first as the main sense here.
The point of the comparison deserves notice. None of these four longings is learnt or chosen. Each belongs to the creature’s own nature, and so the verse is saying that the leaning of his mind is just as natural. Besides, there is something else in it. Three of the four longings are towards something distant: the cloud has to come, the moon has to rise, the day has to break. Waiting is part of that love.
The last two qualifiers show the road this hymn takes. The feet are chinmargamrigya, to be sought by the path of awareness, and kaivalyasaukhyaprada, giving the happiness of release. That a word of knowledge should settle at the end of a verse of devotion is the way of Shankara’s hymns. One verse holds three forms of address, pashupate, vibho and gaurinatha. Counting the syllables gives nineteen to a quarter, the metre being shardulavikridita.

For life today
As the light goes at dusk, the cattle come of their own accord and stand at the gate of the shed. Nobody has taught them either that hour or that place.
There is a longing of that untaught kind inside us too. The noise of the day covers it, but it is enough to notice which way the mind turns the moment a little quiet comes.
