The heaps of material for worship stand ready, but how are we to perform the worship? I have not attained the state of the bird, hard to win as it is, nor that of the boar either. O consort of Uma, O all pervading one, I know the head, but your foot, tender as a young shoot, I do not know. It was not known in its true nature even by the grandfather Brahma or by Hari, who had taken those very forms.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 86ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 86
The story of Lingodbhava stands behind this verse. While Brahma and Vishnu were disputing which of them was the greater, a pillar of light with no visible end rose before them. Brahma became a bird and flew up to find its top, and Vishnu became a boar and dug downwards to find its base. Neither found the end, so the Purana tells. The two words ‘pakshitva’ and ‘kititva’ point to those two forms, and what the poet says is simply that neither of those two routes has been granted to him.
The turn of the verse is that there is no shortage of material, only a shortage of knowledge. Worship means flowers at the feet and water poured on the head. However much has been gathered, if one does not know where to place it the hand does not move. The head above can be seen. The foot, which bears everything, cannot. ‘Kurmahe’ is first person plural, how shall we perform, so the poet’s difficulty can be read as the difficulty of everyone who sets out to worship.
The same run of syllables does two pieces of work here. The first ‘jane’ of the third quarter is a form of the root jna and means I know. In ‘umajane’ in the same quarter the vocative of jani, a husband, is heard: O consort of Uma. So in one line the word for knowing and the name of the lord of the knower stand side by side. ‘Anghripallava’ means the foot as soft as a young shoot. That foot, which was found nowhere, is called not something adamant but a tender sprout.
The instrumental form ‘tadrupina’ in the last quarter goes with Brahma and Hari, for it was they who took those forms. ‘Tattvena’ means as it is, in its true nature. The search was made, an answer seemed to come, and the truth did not. The poet’s not knowing is therefore no excuse of idleness but an honest word spoken in the company of the great. A point about the reading should be added. We have taken ‘umajane’ as a vocative, and some read it instead as in the matter of Uma’s lord. The substance of the verse stays the same under both readings.
Its link with the verses around it deserves notice. Here the poet says he does not know how to perform the worship, in the next verse he asks what Shiva has to give, and in the eighty-ninth he asks what it is that pleases him. One question returns from three directions. A word about the metre. Each quarter has nineteen syllables, and the arrangement of long and short is that of shardulavikridita. From the next verse onwards the metre becomes a shorter one.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
On the day before an examination there is a queue at the stationery shop. We buy the new pen, the geometry box, the writing board, everything that is needed, and put it all in the bag. Even after that, a question stays inside us.
What we buy gives the hand some courage, but it does not answer the question paper. Reckoning quietly how much we know and how much we do not is the real part of preparing. Learning begins with admitting.
