O Bhavani, only when a man has bridged the ocean, has brought the lord of mountains down beneath his palm, and stands having surpassed the lotus born Brahma, is he fit for the worship, the praise and the contemplation of your Shiva.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 88ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 88
The frame of the verse is simple, a pair of when and then. Three long descriptions fill the first two quarters and the end of the third, and all three describe one man. The conclusion comes in the last quarter: then he is fit for the worship. The verse thus sets three conditions for fitness, and all three lie beyond a human hand.
All three conditions recall great feats of the Puranas. Many read the bridging of the ocean as the story of Rama. The hint of a mountain pressed beneath the palm is joined by some to Ravana, who shook Kailasa, and by others to Krishna, who lifted Govardhana. To overpass the lotus born is to exceed Brahma in length of life or in knowledge. What matters more than which story is meant is that the three together make a list of impossibilities.
The life of this verse lies in the single word ‘bhavani’, which can be read in two ways. One is the vocative of the goddess Bhavani, O Bhavani, and that is the sense we have given in the full meaning above. The other is a first person singular form of the root bhu, may I become. Since the vocative of a feminine stem in long i shortens its final vowel, the two forms sound exactly alike.
Read in the second sense the verse turns over. It then says: shall I become fit for your worship only after bridging the ocean, pressing down the mountain and surpassing Brahma? Those conditions never end, so one who sits waiting for fitness will never begin to worship. At the same time, the moment the word is uttered it is also the vocative of Bhavani, so the one who grants fitness has been called upon. Many say that reading the two senses together is the whole point of the verse, and tradition recalls the same play on the word bhavani in the Soundarya Lahari.
The verse sits well among its neighbours. In eighty-six the material was ready and the worship unknown, in eighty-seven came the question of what there was to give, and here comes the question of fitness. In metre too it differs from the previous verse. All four quarters have twelve syllables, the first syllable of each quarter is short, and the arrangement of long and short is that of vamshastha.

In the queue at a passport office people stand holding bundles of papers. One counter is crossed and there is another, and then a word that one more document is needed. Midday arrives before the list of conditions is over.
For good things too we write ourselves such a list of conditions: once the house is in order, once the load of work is lighter, once we know a little more. The qualification needed to begin is probably no more than the willingness to begin.
