ಗಣೇಶ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಬಾರದು, ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಅಪವಾದ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ ನೋಡಿಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕ ಮಣಿಯ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ಅಥವಾ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾರವನ್ನೇ ಹಿಡಿದಿದೆ: ಸಿಂಹ ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು, ಜಾಂಬವಂತ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಕೊಂದ, ಮಗುವೇ ಅಳಬೇಡ, ಈ ಮಣಿ ನಿನ್ನದೇ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಿಂಹಃ ಪ್ರಸೇನಮವಧೀತ್ಸಿಂಹೋ ಜಾಂಬವತಾ ಹತಃ ।
ಸುಕುಮಾರಕ ಮಾ ರೋದೀಸ್ತವ ಹ್ಯೇಷ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕಃ ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
सिंहः प्रसेनमवधीत्सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः ।
सुकुमारक मा रोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಿಂಹಃ (सिंहः, siṃhaḥ) = ಸಿಂಹವು (a lion)
- ಪ್ರಸೇನಮ್ ಅವಧೀತ್ (प्रसेनम् अवधीत्, prasenam avadhīt) = ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು (killed Prasena)
- ಸಿಂಹಃ ಜಾಂಬವತಾ ಹತಃ (सिंहः जाम्बवता हतः, siṃhaḥ jāmbavatā hataḥ) = ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಜಾಂಬವಂತ ಕೊಂದ (the lion was killed by Jambavan)
- ಸುಕುಮಾರಕ (सुकुमारक, sukumāraka) = ಓ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಗುವೇ (O dear little one)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಿಂಹ ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು, ಆ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಜಾಂಬವಂತ ಕೊಂದ. ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಗುವೇ, ಅಳಬೇಡ, ಈ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕ ಮಣಿ ನಿನ್ನದೇ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
A lion killed Prasena, and the lion was killed by Jambavan. Do not cry, dear little one, this Syamantaka jewel is yours.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಕಥೆ ಹೀಗಿದೆ. ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತನ ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಸೇನ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕ ಮಣಿ ಧರಿಸಿ ಬೇಟೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಸಿಂಹ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು. ಆ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಜಾಂಬವಂತ ಕೊಂದು ಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಗುಹೆಗೆ ಒಯ್ದು ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ಆಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ. ಮಣಿಗಾಗಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣನೇ ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದ ಎಂಬ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಅಪವಾದ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಂತು. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತ ಗುಹೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದಾದಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತೇ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.
The story runs thus. Prasena, brother of Satrajit, went hunting wearing the Syamantaka jewel and was killed by a lion. Jambavan killed the lion, took the jewel to his cave and gave it to his child to play with. A false charge fell on Krishna that he had killed Prasena for the jewel. When Krishna traced the cave, the words of the nurse soothing the child there are this very verse.
ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಆ ಅಪವಾದ ಬಂದದ್ದು ಭಾದ್ರಪದ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯ ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಎಂದು ಜನಪದ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ದಿನ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಗಣಪತಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಶಾಪದ ಕಥೆ ಅದರ ಹಿಂದಿದೆ. ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕದ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಆ ದೋಷ ಕಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಕವಾಗಿದೆ.
Popular tradition adds that the charge came upon Krishna because he had seen the moon on the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada. Behind this is the story of Ganapati cursing the moon on that day. It is widely believed that hearing the Syamantaka story removes that fault.

ಕೃಷ್ಣನಂಥವನ ಮೇಲೂ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಅಪವಾದ ಬಂತು. ಅವನು ಕೋಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳದೆ ತಾನೇ ಹೋಗಿ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ತಂದ. ಸುಳ್ಳು ಆರೋಪ ಬಂದಾಗ ವಾದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಶಾಂತವಾಗಿ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಫಲ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಕಥೆ ಕಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Even someone like Krishna faced a false charge. Without anger he went himself and brought back the truth. The story teaches that when falsely accused, calmly showing the truth achieves more than argument.
