They started too big. An hour on the first morning, a thousand rounds promised in the first week.

Start with one round of 108. It takes a few minutes. You can do it on a bad day.

There is no number that works better than another. 108 is the tradition, and it is a good size to begin with. Later you may want 54, 27 or more. Let the habit grow before the count does.

Fix the time to something you already do

Link the round to a thing that happens every day anyway. After the first cup of tea. Before the bath. When you sit down in the evening. The old habit pulls the new one along.

Which hour is best? No study has settled that. The best hour is the one you will keep.

How to sit

Sit on a chair or on the floor, whichever lets your back rest straight and your shoulders loose. If your knees hurt on the floor, use the chair. Nobody is checking.

Hold the mala in your right hand and move one bead with the thumb for each repetition. The bead tells you where you are, so the mind does not have to count.

Say the mantra aloud, in a whisper, or inside. All three are japa. Choose the one that keeps your mind from drifting.

When the mind wanders

It will. This is not a mistake in your practice. It is the practice. Notice, and come back to the next bead.

Some days the mind will wander through the whole round. That day counts too.

Keeping a count

A mala holds a round. Something has to hold the days: how many rounds this week, how many since you began. Some people use a notebook. Some use a calendar with a tick. A phone can do it too, as long as it helps you sit rather than pulls you away.

On the phone, Abhyasa is a quiet japa counter. It is free.

A word on the body

Breathe easily. Do not hold the breath, and do not try to slow it by force. If you feel dizzy, light-headed or short of breath, stop, breathe normally and rest.

If you have a heart or lung problem, or you are on treatment for any illness, japa is a good companion to it. It is not a replacement. Keep your medicines, and keep your appointments.

Begin tomorrow with one round. That is enough for the first day.

ಗೂಗಲ್ ಪ್ಲೇನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಆ್ಯಪ್Abhyasa on Google Play

ಶಾಂತವಾದ ಜಪ ಕೌಂಟರ್. ಉಚಿತ.A quiet japa counter.
