Meditation is not a test of how much pain you can bear.<\/p>\n<h2>What to do<\/h2>\n<p>Breathe in the usual way. Do not try to control the breath. Simply notice it: the cool air at the nose, the belly rising and falling.<\/p>\n<p>When you notice that your mind has gone off to dinner, or to a worry, that is not failure. That is the moment the practice works. Say to yourself, &#8220;thinking&#8221;, and come back to the breath.<\/p>\n<p>You may come back fifty times in five minutes. But if sitting quietly brings up strong fear, sadness or distressing memories, stop and speak with a doctor or counsellor. If you are being treated for a mental health problem, tell your doctor that you meditate, and keep taking your medicines.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, sit for five minutes.
