Here the Pandava conches are tumula too. But this sound makes sky and earth resound and tears the hearts of those opposite. This is the language of poetry. Many commentators explain that the roar sounded so terrible because the awareness of the wrong they had done was already inside them. Notice, too: Sanjaya is saying this to the father of those same sons.
