The name Panchajanya comes from the asura Panchajana. The Bhagavata and other Puranas relate that while rescuing the son of his teacher Sandipani, Krishna killed that asura, who lived in the sea, and took his conch. Devadatta means given by the gods. Hrishikesha means the lord, isha, of the hrishikas, the senses. Arjuna is Dhananjaya, winner of wealth, because he conquered many kings and brought back riches at the time of the Rajasuya. Sridhara Swami explains vrikodara as one with a belly like a wolf.
