The one who answers is Bhishma. He does not argue, nor does he offer words of reassurance. He roars like a lion and blows his conch. Sanjaya himself states the purpose: tasya harsham samjanayan, to raise his spirits. He is grandfather to both sides. The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata records that he had told Duryodhana many times that the war should not happen. Yet today he stands at the head of his army.
