Sridhara Swami explains ayana as the routes by which one breaks into a battle formation. Each warrior must hold his ground. While Bhishma fights those in front of him, no one should be able to strike him from behind. Some commentators connect this to Shikhandi. Bhishma had said beforehand that he would not shoot at Shikhandi, who was born a woman. Duryodhana knew of that one crack. Besides, notice something else. For all this long speech, Drona says not a word.
