In the Veda a group of mantras on one deity or theme is called a sukta. The Rig Veda has more than a thousand suktas in ten books. Stotras are usually verses in classical Sanskrit from the Puranas, the epics, or from teachers such as Shankaracharya. They have no Vedic accent. Their rhythm comes from the metre.
