In the Krishna Yajurveda the anusvara becomes gum in some places. Shankaracharya explains it as prayatna, effort: the work the mouth, tongue and breath do to produce a letter. The difference between ka and kha is one of breath, unaspirated and aspirated. The difference between ka and ga is one of voice, voiceless and voiced.
