As the shape of a pot has no being apart from the clay, a modification has no being of its own apart from its cause. Whatever changes is asat; what remains unchanged is sat. Ramanujacharya&#8217;s reading is direct: asat is the body, sat is the self. On the authority of shruti and smriti he argues that not only the self but prakriti and time too are eternal.
