Tradition reads these as three generations, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; the three rice-balls of the shraddha follow from that. The words of the fourteenth verse are worth noting: those consumed by fire and those not consumed: that is, those who received the rites and those who did not. No one is left outside. And the sixth verse: do not punish us for the faults we commit in the way of human beings.
