degrees on the sun. Thirty tithis make one lunar month, from new moon to new moon.<\/p>\n<p>The count restarts at each new moon. The first fifteen, while the moon is waxing, make the <em>shukla paksha<\/em> and end at the full moon, <em>purnima<\/em>. The next fifteen, while it wanes, make the <em>krishna<\/em> or <em>bahula paksha<\/em> and end at the new moon, <em>amavasya<\/em>. Within each fortnight the tithis are named in order: Prathama, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi, Chaturdashi, and then Purnima or Amavasya.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the lengths vary<\/h2>\n<p>If the moon moved at a constant speed a tithi would always last the same time. It does not. The moon&#8217;s orbit is an ellipse, so it runs faster when it is near the earth and slower when it is far. The earth&#8217;s orbit is also an ellipse, so the sun&#8217;s apparent speed varies too.<\/p>\n<p>The result is that a tithi can be as short as about nineteen hours or as long as about twenty-six. Over a month these average out to roughly 23 hours 37 minutes, which is why a lunar month of thirty tithis comes to about 29.5 days rather than 30.<\/p>\n<h2>Skipped and repeated tithis<\/h2>\n<p>Because a tithi is shorter than a day about half the time, two things can happen.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>tithi kshaya<\/strong>, a lost tithi, occurs when a tithi begins after sunrise and ends before the next sunrise. No day carries it at sunrise, so it seems to vanish from the calendar. Ugadi in 2026 is exactly this case: Shukla Prathama begins at 6:54 in the morning, eighteen minutes after sunrise, and ends before dawn the next day. The convention is that such a tithi takes the day it begins on.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>tithi vriddhi<\/strong>, a stretched tithi, is the opposite: a long tithi is current at two consecutive sunrises, so the same tithi is printed against two dates. Families sometimes differ over which of the two to keep the fast on.<\/p>\n<h2>What a tithi is used for<\/h2>\n<p>Almost every vrata and festival is fixed to a tithi rather than a date. Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each fortnight. Sankashti Chaturthi is the fourth of the waning fortnight. Maha Shivaratri is the fourteenth of the waning fortnight of Magha. Shraddha for the departed is performed on the tithi of death, not its anniversary by date.<\/p>\n<p>Tithis are also grouped for choosing an auspicious time.
