an-en\">\n<p><em>Vara<\/em> is the weekday, the simplest of the five limbs and the only one that requires no astronomy. Each of the seven belongs to one of the seven classical planets: Sunday to the sun, Monday to the moon, Tuesday to Mars, Wednesday to Mercury, Thursday to Jupiter, Friday to Venus and Saturday to Saturn.<\/p>\n<p>The Kannada names say so directly: Bhanuvara, Somavara, Mangalavara, Budhavara, Guruvara, Shukravara, Shanivara.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the days are in that order<\/h2>\n<p>The order looks arbitrary until you look at the hours. The classical planets were ranked by apparent speed, slowest first: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. Each hour of the day was assigned a ruler working down that list and starting again at the top, and each day was named for the planet ruling its first hour.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four hours is not a multiple of seven. Stepping twenty-four places down a cycle of seven lands you three places on, and three places on from the sun is the moon, from the moon is Mars, from Mars is Mercury, and so round. That is exactly the order of the week. The same reasoning produced the same sequence in India, Egypt, Greece and Rome, which is why the week is in the same order in Kannada, Latin, English and Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>This system survives in the <em>hora<\/em>, still printed in almanacs: the planetary hour, reckoned as a twelfth of the daytime and a twelfth of the night rather than a fixed sixty minutes.<\/p>\n<h2>Sunrise to sunrise<\/h2>\n<p>A vara begins at sunrise and ends at the next, not at midnight. This matters more than it sounds. If something happens at two in the morning on a Tuesday by the clock, it happened on Monday by the panchanga, because Tuesday has not begun. Fasts, birthdays reckoned by nakshatra, and the assignment of a tithi to a day all follow the sunrise boundary.<\/p>\n<p>It also means the weekday depends on where you are. Sunrise in Udupi is about forty minutes after sunrise in Kolkata, so for those forty minutes the two cities are on different varas.<\/p>\n<h2>What the day&#8217;s lord governs<\/h2>\n<p>The lord of the day sets the character of several things an almanac prints. The position of Rahu Kala, Yamaganda and Gulika within the daylight hours depends entirely on the weekday. So does the sequence of choghadiya, and which of the fifteen day-muhurtas are counted as Durmuhurta.
