before sunrise, which in practice means it runs from about ninety-six minutes before sunrise to about forty-eight minutes before. In Udupi in September that is roughly 4:45 to 5:33.<\/p>\n<p>Strictly there are two such muhurtas, the fourteenth and fifteenth of the night, and the term is sometimes used for both. Almanacs generally print the first of the two, which is the one governed by Brahma.<\/p>\n<h2>What it is prescribed for<\/h2>\n<p>The classical texts are unusually consistent about this period. It is prescribed for waking, for bathing, for sandhya, for japa and for study. The Ayurvedic texts recommend rising in Brahma Muhurta for the preservation of health, and several yoga texts set it as the time for practice.<\/p>\n<p>The reasoning given is that the mind is least disturbed before dawn: there is quiet, the air is cool, the stomach is empty and nothing has yet made a claim on attention. Whatever one makes of the metaphysics, that description of the hour before dawn is hard to argue with.<\/p>\n<h2>What is actually known<\/h2>\n<p>Worth separating from the tradition: there is reasonable evidence that consistent sleep and wake times matter for health, that morning light exposure helps set the circadian rhythm, and that cortisol rises in the hours before waking in a way that supports alertness. There is no evidence that this particular window is special beyond its relation to sunrise, and the benefit of rising at 4:45 depends entirely on having gone to bed early enough. Rising in Brahma Muhurta on six hours of sleep is not what the texts had in mind; they also prescribe an early night.<\/p>\n<p>Because the period is reckoned from sunrise, it moves through the year and differs by town. In Udupi it shifts by about half an hour between June and December.
