same town can hold Ekadashi on different days, both correctly. The reason is that they are following different reckonings.<\/p>\n<h2>Drik<\/h2>\n<p><em>Drik<\/em> means &#8220;seen&#8221;. A drik or <em>drig-ganita<\/em> panchanga computes where the sun and moon actually are, using modern astronomical theory, and derives the tithi and nakshatra from those positions. If you were to measure the moon&#8217;s position with an instrument tonight, a drik panchanga would agree with you to within a fraction of a minute of arc.<\/p>\n<p>This is what most published almanacs and nearly all panchanga apps use, and it is Anudina&#8217;s default.<\/p>\n<h2>Surya Siddhanta<\/h2>\n<p>The <em>Surya Siddhanta<\/em> is a Sanskrit astronomical text whose surviving form dates to roughly the fourth to fifth century. It computes positions from mean motions, stated as numbers of revolutions completed in a <em>mahayuga<\/em> of 4,320,000 years, counted from the start of the Kali era in 3102 BCE, and then corrects them with epicycles and its own table of sines.<\/p>\n<p>It is a genuine computational astronomy, not a table of results, and it is remarkably good. Its sun agrees with observation to well under a degree even now, sixteen centuries after it was set down. Its moon, which is a harder problem, is within about two degrees.<\/p>\n<p>A siddhantic panchanga follows the text rather than the sky. This is a deliberate choice, not an oversight: the position taken is that dharma is performed according to the reckoning the rishis gave, and that the authority of the method does not depend on its agreement with an instrument.<\/p>\n<h2>The Sringeri panchangam<\/h2>\n<p>The Sringeri Sharada Peetham publishes its annual panchangam on the Surya Siddhanta, and says so explicitly in its preface. Families who follow the Sringeri sampradaya therefore keep some observances on different days from families following a drik almanac.<\/p>\n<h2>How much they differ<\/h2>\n<p>The two reckonings place a tithi boundary up to about two hours apart. That is usually invisible, because a tithi lasts nearly a day and a two-hour shift rarely moves it across sunrise. But when a boundary happens to fall near the reference moment, the observance moves by a whole day.<\/p>\n<p>Across 2025 to 2027, about one observance in ten falls on a different date under the two reckonings. Ganesha Chaturthi, Vijayadashami, several Ekadashis and most of the sankrantis are among those that have moved in recent years.<\/p>\n<h2>Which to follow<\/h2>\n<p>There is no astronomical answer to this, because the disagreement is not about astronomy. It is about which authority a family follows.
