It is one of the few observances in the calendar where the tradition genuinely does not agree with itself about the date, and it is better to say so than to pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n<h2>The date Anudina prints<\/h2>\n<p>The entry here is <strong>Chaitra Purnima<\/strong>, the full moon of Chaitra, taken on the day the purnima is running at sunrise. This is the reckoning of Maharashtra and most of North India, and it is the one most widely published. In Maharashtra the temple observance is at dawn, since Hanuman is held to have been born at sunrise, and the reading of the Ramayana in the temple stops at the moment of the birth, when the offering is made.<\/p>\n<h2>Karnataka keeps it elsewhere<\/h2>\n<p>In Karnataka, Hanuman Jayanti is not a Chaitra festival. It is kept in <strong>Margashira<\/strong>, in the dark fortnight, and is often called Hanuman Vrata. Tamil Nadu keeps Hanumath Jayanti in Margazhi as well, on the amavasya with Moola nakshatra. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana begin a forty-one day <em>deeksha<\/em> on Chaitra Purnima and conclude it on the tenth tithi of the dark fortnight of Vaishakha, which is the day they treat as the jayanti proper.<\/p>\n<p>So a reader in Bengaluru or Mysuru who sees this date in a national calendar and finds the local temple doing nothing has not been misled by either. The full moon of Chaitra is a real Hanuman day, and so is the Margashira one. Anudina prints this one because it is the date the given tithi names; the Margashira observance is a separate entry.<\/p>\n<p>Both reckonings appeal to scripture, and the texts are not consistent. Some Puranic accounts place the birth in Chaitra on the purnima, others in the dark fortnight of Ashwayuja or Margashira, and one tradition distinguishes the birth from the day Hanuman was struck down by Indra and revived, keeping one in each half of the year.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The observance is simple wherever it is kept. Sindura, vermilion mixed with oil, is applied to the image, a practice explained by the story of Hanuman smearing himself with it on learning that Sita wore it for Rama&#8217;s sake. Offerings are of vada, betel leaves, and often a garland of them. The Hanuman Chalisa is recited, or in Kannada and Sanskrit recitation the Anjaneya stotras and the Sundara Kanda, which is read either in one sitting or over the preceding days.<\/p>\n<p>Hanuman is also the deity of Saturday and Tuesday in much of India, and the temple queues on those two days are frequently longer than on the jayanti itself.<\/p>\n<h2>A name to be careful with<\/h2>\n<p>In Karnataka the Madhva tradition regards Hanuman, Bhima and Madhvacharya as three appearances of Vayu, so the Hanuman shrines attached to Madhva mathas, and the Mukhya Prana images installed by Vyasaraja, belong to a theological scheme that a visitor may not expect.
