Gayatri japa. It falls on Prathama, the first tithi of the dark fortnight of Shravana, which is the day immediately after the full moon, and it is reckoned at sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>Its place in the calendar is the point of it. The day before is <a href=\"\/anudina-yajur-upakarma\/\">Yajur Upakarma<\/a>, on which the sacred thread is renewed and the year&#8217;s study formally begun again. Gayatri Pratipat completes that rite the following morning.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The observance is a single thing: the Gayatri mantra is repeated, ideally one thousand and eight times, and where that is not possible, one hundred and eight. It is done after the morning sandhyavandana, facing east, and it is counted rather than recited loosely.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose stated in the sankalpa is <em>prayashchitta<\/em>, expiation. Whatever japa was owed over the past year and not performed, whatever sandhyavandana was skipped or hurried, is made good on this one morning. That is why the count matters and why the day sits where it does, at the head of the new year of study rather than at the end of the old one.<\/p>\n<p>In most Karnataka households this is a quiet domestic rite. Where a community performs Upakarma together at a temple or a math, the japa is often done collectively the next morning at the same place.<\/p>\n<h2>The name, and a confusion worth clearing<\/h2>\n<p><em>Pratipat<\/em> is simply the name of the first tithi of a fortnight. The day carries no other name in most almanacs than Gayatri Japa or Gayatri Japam.<\/p>\n<p>It is not <strong>Gayatri Jayanti<\/strong>. Traditions differ on when that falls, some keeping it on the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha and others on Shravana purnima itself, and it is a separate observance honouring the mantra&#8217;s appearance rather than a day of making up arrears of japa. Almanacs that print both on adjacent pages cause a good deal of confusion here.<\/p>\n<h2>A note on the month name<\/h2>\n<p>Because this day falls in the dark fortnight, the two conventions for naming a month disagree about it. In the amanta reckoning used in Karnataka it is Shravana krishna prathama. In the purnimanta reckoning of most of North India the new month begins at the full moon, so the same day is called Bhadrapada krishna prathama. The tithi is identical and the observance is the same; only the label differs. See <a href=\"\/anudina-masa\/\">Masa: the lunar month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Who keeps it<\/h2>\n<p>It belongs to those who have had upanayana and who therefore have the mantra and the daily obligation of sandhyavandana. The obligation follows the Upakarma of one&#8217;s own shakha, so a Rigvedic household whose Upakarma fell earlier in the month on Shravana nakshatra keeps its japa the day after that, not the day after the purnima.
