Upakarma is the Upakarma of those who follow the Yajurveda. It is kept on the full moon of Shravana, the fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight, taken at sunrise. It is the commonest of the three Upakarmas in Karnataka, because most Smarta families here belong to the Taittiriya recension of the Krishna Yajurveda.<\/p>\n<h2>The day, and why it is not the same as the Rigvedic one<\/h2>\n<p>This one is anchored to a tithi in the ordinary way: the day whose sunrise carries Shravana purnima. <a href=\"\/anudina-rig-upakarma\/\">Rig Upakarma<\/a> is anchored to a nakshatra instead, the day the moon stands in Shravana. The nakshatra and the full moon sit near each other by construction, since the month takes its name from the nakshatra its full moon falls near, but they do not have to coincide, and in a good many years they do not. Two households on the same street can therefore keep Upakarma days apart and both be right.<\/p>\n<p>Samavedins keep theirs later still, on Hasta nakshatra in the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The day begins with a bath, and where there is a river, a tank or the sea nearby, the community gathers there. The rite has four parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prayashchitta<\/strong>: an expiation for the year&#8217;s lapses in study and in the daily rites, with a japa of the Gayatri.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yajnopavita dharana<\/strong>: the new sacred thread is consecrated and worn, and the old one discarded afterwards, not before.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rishi tarpana<\/strong>: water is offered to the rishis of the shakha and the lineage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vedarambha<\/strong>: the opening lines of the Veda are read, beginning the year&#8217;s study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <em>kamokarsheet<\/em> japa, recited as part of the expiation, is often the line people remember the day by. The following morning is <a href=\"\/anudina-gayatri-pratipat\/\">Gayatri Pratipat<\/a>, on which the arrears of japa are made good with a thousand and eight repetitions.<\/p>\n<h2>Regional names and companions<\/h2>\n<p>Tamil Nadu calls the day <em>Avani Avittam<\/em>, after the solar month Avani in which it falls. Kerala and coastal Karnataka Brahmin communities keep it under the same rules.<\/p>\n<p>The same full moon carries two other observances that have nothing to do with Upakarma. <a href=\"\/anudina-raksha-bandhan\/\">Raksha Bandhan<\/a> falls on it, reckoned in the afternoon rather than at sunrise, so the two can occasionally separate. Along the Konkan and Karnataka coast the day is Narali Purnima, when a coconut is offered to the sea and the monsoon fishing ban ends.<\/p>\n<h2>Who it is for<\/h2>\n<p>Upakarma belongs to those who have had upanayana and who carry the obligation of daily sandhyavandana. It is not a household festival in the way Naga Panchami is, and there is no special food attached to it.
