It falls in the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada and is decided by the tithi running in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<h2>The story<\/h2>\n<p>The asura Hiranyaksha carried the earth down into the cosmic waters and hid her there. Vishnu took the form of a boar, an animal that digs and roots and is at home in mud, entered the water, found the earth, lifted her on his tusks and set her back in her place, killing Hiranyaksha in the fight that followed. The earth, Bhudevi, is shown in the sculpture seated on the tusk or in the crook of the boar&#8217;s arm, small and composed, and the pairing of the two is the commonest form in which Varaha is worshipped.<\/p>\n<p>The point of the story is not rescue alone. Varaha is the avatara of restoration, the one who puts back what has been displaced, and that is what he is invoked for: land, property, stability, the recovery of something lost.<\/p>\n<h2>In Karnataka<\/h2>\n<p>Varaha is not a household deity in most Kannada homes, and the day passes chiefly in Vaishnava temples and in Madhva households, with abhisheka, the Varaha stotras, and a fast for those who keep it strictly. The image is well known here for another reason: the boar, with the sun, the moon and a dagger, was the state emblem of the Vijayanagara empire, and it appears on Vijayanagara coins and on temple walls all over the old territory. At Tirumala the shrine of Varahaswami on the tank is older than the main temple by tradition, and pilgrims are expected to take his darshana first.<\/p>\n<h2>Which tithi<\/h2>\n<p>Almanacs do not agree on where to put this day, and it is honest to say so. Anudina takes the <strong>tritiya<\/strong> of Bhadrapada shukla paksha, on the day on which the tritiya is running in the afternoon, the <em>aparahna<\/em>. This is how Drik Panchang, Prokerala and the Madhva calendars on madhwasakha have it. In 2025 the day was 25 August, and in 2026 it is 13 September.<\/p>\n<p>Some older almanacs place Varaha Jayanti on the chaturthi instead, and so print it on the same day as <a href=\"\/anudina-ganesh-chaturthi\/\">Ganesha Chaturthi<\/a>. A reader who finds the two together in one almanac and Varaha Jayanti a day earlier in another is looking at this difference, not at an error. There is also a separate <em>Varaha Dwadashi<\/em> observed in some traditions in Magha, which is a different day altogether and not a variant of this one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"an-body\"
