kept on the full moon of Bhadrapada, decided by the tithi at sunrise. It is a small observance and is nowhere a public one.<\/p>\n<p>What distinguishes it is that the two are worshipped as a pair rather than singly, Uma and Maheshwara together in one image or in two set side by side, and that it is kept by husband and wife together where it is kept at all. A fast through the day, a puja in the evening, a thread tied on the wrist in some households, and a dana given in pairs: two of whatever is offered, on the reasoning that the deity is a pair.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose named for it is the removal of the fault incurred by slighting what is worthy of respect, a teacher, an elder, or a gift given in good faith. The katha told with it turns on exactly that, a gift from the sage Durvasa that was treated carelessly and a curse that followed, with this vrata prescribed as the remedy. Versions of the story differ in who gave and who slighted, and it is fair to say the story is less fixed than the observance.<\/p>\n<p>Two things sit on the same day and are worth keeping separate. The purnima of Bhadrapada is also the close of the Smarta <a href=\"\/anudina-chaturmasya\/\">chaturmasya<\/a>, which has nothing to do with this vrata. And the day that follows the purnima begins the Mahalaya paksha, the fortnight given to the ancestors, so a household may find a vrata for a divine couple and the first of the shraddha days almost touching each other. They are unrelated.
