the fortnight given to the ancestors. It is the principal day of the year for tarpana and shraddha, and the day on which a rite missed on its own tithi can still be done.<\/p>\n<h2>The fortnight it closes<\/h2>\n<p>The fifteen days from the full moon of Bhadrapada to this new moon are the <em>pitru paksha<\/em>, also called the mahalaya paksha. During it a household performs shraddha for a departed parent or grandparent on the tithi matching the tithi of death: someone who died on a Saptami is remembered on the Saptami of this fortnight, whatever month the death fell in. It is a compressed annual round of every shraddha the family owes.<\/p>\n<p>The amavasya at the end absorbs what the fortnight cannot. Called <em>sarva pitru amavasya<\/em>, the new moon of all the ancestors, it serves those whose tithi of death is unknown, those whose tithi was lost between two sunrises, the maternal line, and any observance missed. Households who keep nothing else in the fortnight keep this day.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the afternoon tithi, not the sunrise one<\/h2>\n<p>A day is normally said to carry the tithi running when the sun rises. That rule suits anything kept through the whole day: a festival, a fast begun at dawn, a birthday reckoned by nakshatra. The day begins at sunrise and takes its character from what is in force then.<\/p>\n<p>A shraddha is not like that. It is a rite performed at a stated hour. Divide the daytime, sunrise to sunset, into five equal parts: the fourth is <em>aparahna<\/em>. The texts prescribe aparahna for offerings to the pitrs, and not as a preference to be set aside for convenience. The offering belongs to that part of the day as firmly as sandhya belongs to dawn and dusk.<\/p>\n<p>Once the hour is fixed, the date follows. The question is not which day the tithi begins on but on which day Amavasya is running when the rite must be performed. If Amavasya begins in the late morning, that day carries the shraddha though Chaturdashi was running at its sunrise. If it is current at sunrise but ends before the fourth part of the day, the observance falls on the day before instead.<\/p>\n<p>This is the most consequential timing rule in the calendar, because it governs every shraddha and every tarpana, not this day alone. A household reading a printed list of festivals and a household reading a shraddha almanac can be a day apart on the same amavasya, and neither is mistaken. They are answering different questions.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The core rite is <em>tila tarpana<\/em>: water with black sesame offered to three generations of the paternal line, to the maternal line, and in many households to the departed of the wider family and to those who have nobody left to offer for them. It is done after a bath, facing south, with the sacred thread over the right shoulder. Where there is a river people go to it, and the ghats at Talakadu and Gokarna fill. Where a full shraddha is done, pindas of cooked rice are offered and a portion set out for crows, and the meal that follows, cooked without onion or garlic, is eaten only after the offering.<\/p>\n<h2>A common error<\/h2>\n<p>The fortnight is widely treated as inauspicious, and purchases, weddings and house entry are put off through it. The tradition does not call it inauspicious. It says the fortnight belongs to the pitrs, and that beginnings are set aside because attention is owed elsewhere. That is a different statement, and it matters to anyone told that what is bought in these days will not last.<\/p>\n<p>The fortnight ends here, and Navaratri begins at the next sunrise.
