It is the first full moon after the monsoon, when the sky over most of the peninsula has cleared, and tradition holds it to be the brightest moon of the year and the only one at which the moon is said to stand in all sixteen of its parts.<\/p>\n<h2>When it falls<\/h2>\n<p>Most purnimas are placed by the tithi running at sunrise, but this one is kept for its night: the vigil, the kheer set out under the moon and the Kojagari question all belong to the hours after dark. Anudina therefore places it on the day on which the purnima is running at <a href=\"\/anudina-nishita-muhurta\/\">nishita<\/a>, the middle of the night. Drik Panchang puts it the same way, as the day when Purnima is <em>nishithvyapini<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The two rules part company more often than one might expect. Purnima lasts a little under a day and can begin in the afternoon and end the following afternoon, so the date that carries the sunrise tithi is not always the date whose night has the full moon overhead. In 2025 the night rule gives 6 October where the sunrise rule would give 7 October, and in 2026 it gives 25 October where the sunrise rule would give 26 October. A household that keeps the vigil on the earlier night is keeping the day Anudina prints, and an almanac that shows the later date is answering a different question.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The characteristic observance is simple. Milk boiled with rice and sugar, kheer or payasa, is set out in a vessel under the open sky through the night and eaten at the end of it. The reason given is that the moon&#8217;s rays carry <em>amrita<\/em> on this night and the food takes it up. In parts of western India the same reasoning is applied medicinally, and the exposed milk is given to people with asthma.<\/p>\n<p>The other strand is Lakshmi. The night is called <em>Kojagari Purnima<\/em>, from the question ko jagarti, who is awake. Lakshmi is said to move about asking it, and to stay where she finds someone still up. Bengal, Odisha and Maharashtra therefore keep a lit and wakeful house, with lamps at the door and a night of conversation, games or dice. Odisha keeps it as Kumara Purnima, for Kartikeya. In Braj it is Rasa Purnima, the night of Krishna&#8217;s circle dance with the gopis, in which the moon is said to have stood still. It is also observed as Valmiki Jayanti.<\/p>\n<h2>Karnataka<\/h2>\n<p>It is honest to say that this full moon is kept lightly in Karnataka compared with what Bengal and Maharashtra make of it. Most households mark it as they mark any purnima, with a Satyanarayana puja or a lamp and a fast, and the moonlight kheer is a custom that has spread here more through migration and through print than from old local practice. See <a href=\"\/anudina-purnima\/\">Purnima<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where the month turns<\/h2>\n<p>This full moon is a boundary in one reckoning and not in the other. In the purnimanta calendars of North India the month of Kartika begins the day after it, which is why the Kartika lamps and the month-long bathing vow are taken up from here in the North. In the amanta reckoning of Karnataka, Ashwina still has a dark fortnight to run and Kartika does not begin until after the new moon of Deepavali. The tithis are the same in both. Only the month label differs, and with it the date on which a vow described as lasting the month of Kartika is understood to start.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"an-body\"
