an-en\">\n<p>Tulasi Vivaha is a wedding performed in the courtyard. The tulasi plant growing in its brick stand is the bride, and the groom is Vishnu, present as a saligrama stone or as a small image of Krishna. The rite is a wedding in full: the plant is bathed and dressed, a thread is tied, mantras are said over the pair, and the household gives away the bride as it would give away a daughter.<\/p>\n<h2>When it falls and why<\/h2>\n<p>It is the twelfth tithi, Dwadashi, of the bright fortnight of Kartika. The day that carries it is the day on which Dwadashi is running <strong>at pradosha<\/strong>, the hour or so after sunset.<\/p>\n<p>The reference moment matters here more than usual, because the rite itself belongs to dusk. A wedding is performed in the evening, the lamps are lit at the tulasi stand at dusk, and so the day chosen is the day on which the tithi is present at that hour, not at sunrise. This is why an almanac that files every festival by the sunrise tithi will sometimes put Tulasi Vivaha a day earlier than the household actually keeps it.<\/p>\n<p>In Karnataka the observance is commonly called Tulasi Habba or Utthana Dwadashi. Some families begin on the eleventh in the evening and continue to the twelfth; others hold that the rite may be performed on any evening from Dwadashi to the full moon, which is the usual practice in the north.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the wedding season opens here<\/h2>\n<p>The day before is Prabodhini Ekadashi, also called Utthana Ekadashi, the awakening. Vaishnava reckoning holds that Vishnu sleeps through the four months from Ashadha shukla Ekadashi, the chaturmasya, and rises on this eleventh of Kartika. While he sleeps, weddings, upanayana, house entry and other auspicious beginnings are set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Tulasi Vivaha is therefore the first wedding of the year in the literal sense: the god has just woken, and the first marriage conducted is his own. From the day after, the muhurta lists open again and human weddings resume. That is the whole of the connection, and it is why the household rite and the wedding season are described in the same breath.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The tulasi katte is washed and whitewashed in the days before, and decorated with rangoli. On the evening itself a branch of nellikai, the amla tree, is planted beside the tulasi, along with sugarcane, and the two are tied together. Lamps are set all round the stand, often in the small earthen cups kept for Kartika. The offerings are the plain ones: avalakki, bellada kadubu, sugarcane pieces, amla and whatever fruit is in season.<\/p>\n<p>The story behind it is the account of Vrinda, the wife of the asura Jalandhara, whose fidelity made her husband unkillable, and who became the tulasi plant after Vishnu broke that protection by deceit. Vishnu accepts the reproach and takes her as his own in the form of the plant.
