\u0c95\u0cc6\u0c82\u0caa\u0cc1.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"an-body an-en\">\n<p>Subrahmanya Shashti is the principal festival of the year for Subrahmanya in Karnataka. It is the sixth tithi of the bright fortnight of Margashira, and it is the day of the Shashti mahotsava at Kukke Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada, which draws the largest crowd that temple sees.<\/p>\n<h2>When it falls and why<\/h2>\n<p>The tithi is Shashthi of Margashira shukla paksha, and the day that carries it is the day on which Shashthi is running <strong>at sunrise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Where an almanac differs by a day, look at the hour the tithi begins. If Shashthi begins after sunrise, that day belongs to Panchami, and the festival goes to the next day. Temples with a multi day utsava count backwards from this day, so the whole programme shifts with it.<\/p>\n<h2>Kukke, and the serpent<\/h2>\n<p>At Kukke Subrahmanya the deity is worshipped as lord of serpents, and Vasuki is held to be present with him in the sanctum. The festival ends with the rathotsava and with the carrying of the deity to the Kumaradhara, and the day after is the Laksha Deepotsava. The temple is the reference point in Karnataka for Sarpa Samskara and Ashlesha Bali, rites performed against sarpa dosha, and those bookings cluster around this season.<\/p>\n<p>Champa Shashti is the same tithi in Maharashtra, kept above all at Jejuri for Khandoba, who is identified with Skanda and with Shiva in that tradition. There the observance runs six days from the first tithi to the sixth, the fast is broken on this day, and the offering is bhandara, turmeric powder, thrown in handfuls. The name comes from the champa flower used in the worship.<\/p>\n<h2>The confusion worth clearing<\/h2>\n<p>This is not <a href=\"\/anudina-skanda-shashti\/\">Skanda Shashti<\/a>. That falls a lunar month earlier, on the sixth of bright Kartika, and is the six day observance ending in the Surasamhara, the killing of Surapadma, kept most strongly in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<p>Both days honour the same deity on the same tithi number of consecutive months, which is exactly why they are mixed up. The short way to keep them apart: Kartika is the Tamil Nadu day and the war against Surapadma; Margashira is the Karnataka and Maharashtra day, Kukke and Jejuri. An almanac that lists only one of the two is not wrong, it has simply chosen a region.<\/p>\n<p>A third name adds to the tangle. The Shashthi of any bright fortnight is called Skanda Shashthi by those who keep the monthly vrata, so a household calendar may print Skanda Shashthi twelve times a year. The two festivals are the two that carry a temple utsava behind them.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>Those who keep the vrata fast on the day and eat after the evening puja. Abhisheka with milk, tender coconut and turmeric water is usual, and the offering of a silver or clay serpent figure is common at Subrahmanya temples in Karnataka. Households with a family sarpa kallu in the field or the garden clean it, light lamps and offer milk.
