Jayanti is kept as the anniversary of the day the Bhagavad Gita was spoken, on the field at Kurukshetra, between the two armies and before the first arrow. It is not the birthday of a deity but of a text, which makes it unusual among the days an almanac carries.<\/p>\n<h2>When it falls and why<\/h2>\n<p>It is Ekadashi, the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Margashira, and the day that carries it is the day on which Ekadashi is running <strong>at sunrise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The same tithi is Mokshada Ekadashi, one of the twenty six named ekadashis, so for anyone who keeps the ekadashi fast the two observances fall together and are kept together. The fast and its rules are the ekadashi ones, described in the <a href=\"\/anudina-ekadashi\/\">general Ekadashi page<\/a>; nothing about the Gita reading changes them.<\/p>\n<p>Where the two can part company is in the viddha rule. A Vaishnava household that postpones an ekadashi touched by the previous sunrise will move its fast to the following day, while the Gita parayana stays with the sunrise Ekadashi. Households that observe both will usually let the parayana follow the fast, but it is a choice rather than a rule.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Margashira<\/h2>\n<p>The month is Krishna&#8217;s own. In the tenth chapter, listing the forms in which he is best seen, he says that among the months he is Margashirsha. The bright fortnight of that month is therefore doubly appropriate for the text, and the connection is made in the tradition itself rather than added later.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The observance is reading. A full parayana of all eighteen chapters, seven hundred verses, takes a practised reader a long morning, and groups read in relay so that the whole is completed within the day. Where a full reading is not possible the fifteenth chapter, or the second, is read instead. Temples and mathas hold discourses, and schools that teach the text hold recitation contests. In Karnataka the day is marked at Madhva mathas and at Sringeri, and Gita classes commonly begin or conclude on it.<\/p>\n<p>Kurukshetra itself keeps the largest observance, a week of programmes at Jyotisar, the spot identified as where the chariot stood.<\/p>\n<h2>What is worth being plain about<\/h2>\n<p>The date is a traditional attribution, not a historical record. No source fixes the event to a year that can be converted, and the tithi is held by the tradition rather than established by evidence. That does not weaken the observance, and it is better stated than glossed over.<\/p>\n<p>The public form of Gita Jayanti, with processions, mass recitations and organised events, is comparatively recent, a growth of the last century and a half.
