kept twice a lunar month, once in each fortnight. Its whole character comes from its hour: it belongs to the evening, and the puja is performed in the short interval after the sun has gone down.<\/p>\n<h2>The hour, and how the day is chosen<\/h2>\n<p><em>Pradosha<\/em> is the junction of day and night, reckoned in most Karnataka practice as the three ghatikas, a little over an hour, that follow sunset. Some authorities begin it slightly before sunset and carry it the same distance after. Either way it is a short window, and it is the moment that decides the date.<\/p>\n<p>The day that carries the vrata is the day whose pradosha has trayodashi running in it. This is not the same question as which morning trayodashi is current at sunrise, and the two answers differ several times a year. A trayodashi that begins in the middle of the afternoon carries the vrata that same evening even though the morning belonged to dwadashi; a trayodashi that is current at sunrise but ends before sunset does not carry it at all, and the vrata goes to the day before. Anudina prints the trayodashi boundaries against the pradosha window for exactly this reason.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The fast runs through the day and is broken after the evening puja, not before. In Shiva temples the pradosha abhisheka is the fixed observance of the fortnight: the linga is bathed while the Rudram is recited, and Nandi is worshipped along with Shiva. Many temples in Karnataka time their main evening abhisheka to it, and at Gokarna, Nanjangud, Shivagange and the older town temples the pradosha crowd is larger than on an ordinary evening. The household form is simpler: a lamp, bilva leaves, and abstention from grain until the puja is over.<\/p>\n<p>The reason given is the churning of the ocean. When the poison rose Shiva swallowed it, and the moment at which the devas found that he had survived and could be worshipped again was pradosha. Shiva is said to dance between the horns of Nandi at that hour, which is why the bull is given his share of the worship on this evening and not merely acknowledged in passing.<\/p>\n<h2>Shani Pradosha and Soma Pradosha<\/h2>\n<p>A pradosha takes an additional name from the weekday it falls on, and two of those names matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shani Pradosha<\/strong> is a pradosha falling on a Saturday. Saturday belongs to Shani, and Shani is the planet most people want something done about: the sade sati, the ashtama shani, the seven and a half years everyone has heard of. The remedy prescribed for Shani is not usually more Shani worship but Shiva worship, on the ground that Shani himself is Shiva devotee and is bound by that. A Saturday pradosha therefore gathers the two together, and the queues at a Shiva temple on a Shani Pradosha evening are longer than on any other pradosha of the year. Nothing about the ritual changes; only the number of people does.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soma Pradosha<\/strong> is a Monday pradosha. Monday is already Shiva day, so the combination is held to be doubly favourable, and it is kept particularly by women for the welfare of a husband or for a marriage. A Tuesday pradosha is Bhauma Pradosha, sought for relief from illness and from debt.<\/p>\n<h2>What comes next<\/h2>\n<p>Trayodashi is followed by chaturdashi, and the chaturdashi of the dark fortnight is <a href=\"\/anudina-masa-shivaratri\/\">Masa Shivaratri<\/a>.
