fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight, the day of the full moon, and it closes the waxing half of every lunar month. It comes round about every twenty-nine and a half days, twelve times in an ordinary year and thirteen in a year with an intercalary month.<\/p>\n<h2>The instant and the tithi<\/h2>\n<p>These are two different things, and confusing them is the commonest error about the full moon.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>instant<\/strong> of the full moon is the moment the moon stands exactly opposite the sun, at one hundred and eighty degrees of elongation. It is a single point in time, the same point for the whole world, and at that instant the moon is as fully lit as it will get.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>tithi<\/strong> called purnima is the interval during which that elongation runs from one hundred and sixty-eight degrees to one hundred and eighty. So the instant of opposition is not the middle of the tithi, it is the end of it. If the full moon falls at two in the morning, the purnima tithi was running through the previous evening, and the previous evening is the one on which the moon looked full to anyone who went outside. The day that carries purnima is the day on which the tithi is current at sunrise, and that is normally also the evening on which the moon appears full.<\/p>\n<p>A few purnima observances ask for the tithi at night rather than at sunrise, and in those the date can fall the other way. Anudina gives the tithi start and end rather than a bare label, so which day an observance takes can be worked out rather than guessed.<\/p>\n<h2>What is done<\/h2>\n<p>The general observance is a fast until moonrise, a bath in a river or tank where one is at hand, and dana. The <strong>Satyanarayana Puja<\/strong> is the characteristic purnima rite and is performed on more purnimas than on any other day of the month, at home, with the reading of the five chapters of the katha and the offering of sapada bhakshya, the sweetened wheat and semolina preparation made in the proportion of one and a quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, most purnimas carry a festival of their own, and it is those, rather than purnima in the abstract, that a household actually keeps: <a href=\"\/anudina-buddha-purnima\/\">Buddha Purnima<\/a> in Vaishakha, <a href=\"\/anudina-guru-purnima\/\">Guru Purnima<\/a> in Ashadha, the Upakarma and Raksha Bandhan in Shravana, <a href=\"\/anudina-sharad-purnima\/\">Sharad Purnima<\/a> in Ashwayuja, <a href=\"\/anudina-kartika-purnima\/\">Kartika Purnima<\/a> with its lamps, <a href=\"\/anudina-datta-jayanti\/\">Datta Jayanti<\/a> in Margashira, <a href=\"\/anudina-magha-purnima\/\">Magha Purnima<\/a> with its river bathing, and the bonfire of <a href=\"\/anudina-holika-dahan\/\">Holika Dahana<\/a> in Phalguna.<\/p>\n<h2>Two notes on the calendar<\/h2>\n<p>Purnima ends the bright fortnight in every reckoning, but in the purnimanta system of North India it also ends the month, while in the amanta system of Karnataka the month runs on for another fortnight. This is why the same full moon can be described as the full moon of two different months depending on who is speaking. The tithi does not move.<\/p>\n<p>A purnima falling on a Monday is Somavati Purnima; on a full moon that also carries Shravana nakshatra in Shravana masa the Upakarma is performed.
