The next sunrise begins a new month.<\/p>\n<h2>The instant and the tithi<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>instant<\/strong> of the new moon is the moment the sun and the moon share the same longitude, at zero degrees of elongation. It is one point in time for the whole earth. The <strong>tithi<\/strong> called amavasya is the interval in which the elongation climbs from three hundred and forty-eight degrees to three hundred and sixty, so the instant of conjunction is the end of the tithi and not its middle. The name says as much: <em>ama<\/em> and <em>vasya<\/em>, dwelling together, the two lights in one place.<\/p>\n<p>The day that carries amavasya is the day on which the tithi is running at sunrise. Rites for the ancestors, however, ask for the tithi at the middle of the day, in the <em>aparahna<\/em>, the afternoon watch, because that is the part of the day given to the pitrus. When amavasya is current at sunrise but ends before the afternoon, the shraddha can move to the previous day even though the calendar prints amavasya against this one. This is the single most frequent cause of a family and a printed almanac disagreeing about a tarpana date.<\/p>\n<h2>The ancestors<\/h2>\n<p>Amavasya is the day of the month for <em>pitru karya<\/em>. Tarpana is offered with water, sesame and darbha, and in many households a shraddha is performed. The annual shraddha for a parent is kept on the tithi of death, but the monthly amavasya belongs to the ancestors collectively, and the practice of going to a river or a tank on that morning is old and widespread.<\/p>\n<p>Two amavasyas carry more than the usual weight. <a href=\"\/anudina-mahalaya-amavasya\/\">Mahalaya Amavasya<\/a> closes the fortnight of Bhadrapada given entirely to the pitrus and is the most important tarpana day of the year. The amavasya of Ashwayuja is the night of <a href=\"\/anudina-lakshmi-puja\/\">Lakshmi Puja<\/a> at Deepavali, the darkest night of the year filled with lamps, which is the reverse of the usual character of the day.<\/p>\n<h2>In Karnataka<\/h2>\n<p>Several amavasyas have their own observance here. The Ashadha amavasya is <strong>Bhimana Amavasye<\/strong>, kept by women and girls with the Jyotirbhimeshwara vrata: two lamps set in a cone of mud or dough, worship of Shiva and Parvati, and the bhandara, the knotted thread. The Shravana amavasya, kept in North Karnataka as the day of the farm, sees offerings made at the field and the plough honoured. The amavasya of Margashira, when it falls on a Monday, draws crowds to the river ghats.<\/p>\n<h2>What it is not<\/h2>\n<p>Amavasya is widely described as inauspicious, and that is too blunt. It is unsuitable for beginnings: weddings, house entry, journeys and the start of new work are not fixed on it. It is the correct and preferred day for rites for the departed, for dana, and for certain forms of upasana, and the Lakshmi Puja of Deepavali falls on it. A day that is wrong for one class of action is not thereby a bad day.<\/p>\n<p>The related word <em>Somavati Amavasya<\/em> means simply an amavasya falling on a Monday, held to be particularly fit for bathing and for tarpana.
