dark fortnight of Vaishakha in the amanta reckoning, and of Jyeshtha in the purnimanta almanacs of the north. It falls in the hot weeks before the monsoon, and it is the last ekadashi before Nirjala.<\/p>\n<h2>The names<\/h2>\n<p><em>Apara<\/em> is read as the boundless, that which has no far shore, and by extension the vrata that yields merit without measure. The same day is printed as <strong>Achala Ekadashi<\/strong> in many almanacs, achala meaning unmoving or steady. In parts of Odisha it is called Jalakrida Ekadashi and in some northern lists Bhadrakali Ekadashi. These are one day under four names, and a reader comparing two calendars should not take them for separate observances.<\/p>\n<h2>The mahatmya<\/h2>\n<p>The mahatmya is given in the Brahmanda Purana, told by Krishna to Yudhishthira. What it claims for the day is unusually specific: the vrata is said to remove the consequence of killing a brahmin, of speaking falsely as a witness, of slandering a teacher, and of the presumption of a man who takes up work he has no title to. These are among the gravest faults the smritis list, and the chapter is arranged as a series of comparisons, each dana or tirtha named and the vrata said to exceed it.<\/p>\n<p>The phala said to follow, in short, is the wiping out of what cannot ordinarily be wiped out. That is the tradition&#8217;s claim and it is recorded here as such.<\/p>\n<h2>In practice<\/h2>\n<p>Nothing sets Apara apart in the keeping. It has no special puja, no food of its own and no regional festival attached, in Karnataka or elsewhere in the south. The fast, the sunrise reckoning of the tithi, the dashami question and the parana are the general rules on the <a href=\"\/anudina-ekadashi\/\">Ekadashi page<\/a>.
