\u0c87\u0cb0\u0cc1\u0cb5\u0c82\u0ca4\u0cc6\u0caf\u0cc7.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"an-body an-en\">\n<p>Nirjala Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, and it is the one ekadashi of the year that is genuinely different in the keeping.<\/p>\n<h2>What is different<\/h2>\n<p><em>Nirjala<\/em> is without water. The fast is kept without food and without water from the sunrise of the ekadashi until the parana on dwadashi morning, where the usual ekadashi fast permits water and often a phalahara. Jyeshtha is the hottest month of the year, in the middle of grishma ritu, and the austerity is placed there deliberately. Anyone in poor health, and anyone for whom heat is a risk, is exempted by the same texts that praise it; the tradition treats this as a vrata of capacity, not an obligation.<\/p>\n<h2>The mahatmya, and why it is kept alone<\/h2>\n<p>The account attached to it is from the Mahabharata and repeated in the puranic ekadashi chapters. Bhima, unable to bear hunger, could not keep the twenty four fasts of the year though his brothers and Draupadi kept them all. He asked Vyasa for a way out, and was given this one day: keep it, without water, and the fruit of all the rest is said to follow. The day carries his name in much of India, <strong>Bhimseni<\/strong> or <strong>Pandava Ekadashi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That is why it is the ekadashi kept by people who keep no other. The phala said to follow is the whole year&#8217;s merit in a single day, which is a substitution the tradition offers openly rather than a loophole.<\/p>\n<h2>Where it is kept<\/h2>\n<p>Nirjala is most prominent in North India, Gujarat and Maharashtra, where water is given away on the day: pots, shelters, chhatras, buttermilk and panaka set out for passers by. In Karnataka its presence is smaller, for a plain reason. A household that already keeps every ekadashi has no need of a substitute, and Nirjala is kept here as the year&#8217;s severest ekadashi rather than as a stand in for the others. The dana of water, a pot, a fan or an umbrella is the form of giving named for the day.<\/p>\n<h2>A calendar note<\/h2>\n<p>In a year that carries an <a href=\"\/anudina-adhika-masa\/\">adhika Jyeshtha<\/a>, Nirjala is kept in the nija month, not the intercalary one, and the two ekadashis of the intercalary month take the names Padmini and Parama.
