Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Ashadha. Of the twenty four it is the one with the largest consequence for the calendar, because the four months of <a href=\"\/anudina-chaturmasya\/\">chaturmasya<\/a> begin here.<\/p>\n<h2>The name and what is said of the day<\/h2>\n<p><em>Shayani<\/em> is the sleeping. Vishnu is said to lie down on Shesha in the ocean of milk on this day and to rise four months later on Prabodhini or Utthana Ekadashi in Kartika. Halfway between, on Parsva Ekadashi in Bhadrapada, he is said to turn on to his other side. The three days form one sequence, and Devshayani is its opening. The day is also called Harishayani, Padma Ekadashi, Ashadhi or simply Prathama Ekadashi.<\/p>\n<h2>What follows from it<\/h2>\n<p>This is the practical part, and it is why the day matters to households that are not otherwise particular. For the Vaishnava reckoning the four months from here are set aside: no weddings, no upanayana, no house entry, no other auspicious beginning until Vishnu is woken in Kartika. Anyone planning such an event works backwards from this ekadashi.<\/p>\n<p>The Smarta reckoning differs, and the difference is worth stating because it is often glossed over. The sanyasi&#8217;s chaturmasya vrata in the Sringeri sampradaya and the other Shankara mathas begins not here but at the purnima of Ashadha, four tithis later, with the Vyasa Puja of <a href=\"\/anudina-guru-purnima\/\">Guru Purnima<\/a>. The two traditions therefore start the four months four days apart, and both are correct within their own sampradaya.<\/p>\n<h2>Where it is a festival<\/h2>\n<p>In Maharashtra this is Ashadhi Ekadashi, the day the wari reaches Pandharpur and the largest single observance of the ekadashi anywhere. The Vitthal temples of north Karnataka and the Kannada districts bordering Maharashtra keep it in the same spirit, and Karnataka pilgrims walk in the wari.
