The name is moksha and da, the giver of release, and both the story attached to it and the way it is kept follow from that.<\/p>\n<h2>Gita Jayanti<\/h2>\n<p>This is the tithi on which the Bhagavadgita is held to have been spoken at Kurukshetra, and Gita Jayanti falls on it. In Karnataka that means a parayana of the Gita, often the whole of it read through in one sitting, and in mathas and temples a formal recitation beginning with the Gita Dhyana verses. On this day the reading is treated as the principal work, as much as the fast is. It has its own post, <a href=\"\/anudina-gita-jayanti\/\">Gita Jayanti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Vaikuntha Ekadashi<\/h2>\n<p>In the Tamil country and in the Vaishnava temples of the south, the bright fortnight ekadashi that falls while the sun stands in Dhanus is kept as Vaikuntha Ekadashi, when the vaikuntha dwara is opened and the queue passes through it. That reckoning is solar and the ekadashi is lunar, so the day usually turns out to be Mokshada, but not always: in some years it lands on the bright fortnight ekadashi of the month following. The two observances are not tied to each other and neither takes its meaning from the other; they coincide most of the time and that is all.<\/p>\n<h2>The mahatmya<\/h2>\n<p>The Brahmanda Purana gives the story of Vaikhanasa, king of Champaka, who saw his dead father in torment in a dream. The brahmanas of his court told him to keep this ekadashi and to assign its phala to his father, which he did, and the father was released. What the story establishes is a practice: on this day, more than on the others, the merit of the fast is commonly made over to a dead parent or ancestor rather than kept for oneself.
