In the amanta reckoning of Karnataka, where Phalguna is the last month of the year, it is the last ekadashi of the year. Purnimanta calendars in the North place the same day in Chaitra, where it reads as the first of the year instead. The tithi is identical and the day is the same; the two systems only label it differently.<\/p>\n<h2>The name<\/h2>\n<p>Papa is sin and mochani is she who looses or releases. The phala claimed is the removal of accumulated sin, including kinds the texts elsewhere describe as not removable, and the claim made for this day is larger than for most of the others. That it stands at the turn of the year, closing the account of one before the next begins, is the only structural thing about its position, and it is worth noticing without being made too much of.<\/p>\n<h2>The mahatmya<\/h2>\n<p>The Bhavishyottara Purana gives the story of Medhavi, son of Chyavana, performing tapas in the Chaitraratha forest, and the apsara Manjughosha sent to break it. She succeeded, and the two lived together a long time before he came back to himself and cursed her to become a pishachi. She asked how she might be released and he named this ekadashi. She kept it and was freed. Medhavi kept it too, on his father&#8217;s advice, to make good the tapas he had lost. The text is candid that both parties in the story stood in need of it, which is unusual and is probably the point.<\/p>\n<h2>In practice<\/h2>\n<p>Nothing in the observance sets Papamochani apart from the other ekadashis. There is no separate puja, no particular food, no custom peculiar to it in Karnataka, and no temple observance. Its only distinguishing feature is its place at the end of the year, and the intention some bring to it because of that.
