Like Padmini, it is not an annual observance.<\/p>\n<h2>Why it is not annual<\/h2>\n<p>The lunar year runs about eleven days short of the solar one, and the calendar corrects for it with a thirteenth month. A lunar month in which the sun does not change zodiac sign takes the name of the month after it and is marked adhika. This falls out roughly every third year, seven times in nineteen. The detail is in the post on <a href=\"\/anudina-adhika-masa\/\">adhika masa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The extra month brings two extra fortnights and so two extra ekadashis, which cannot take the names the ordinary twelve months have already used. The bright fortnight one is Padmini and the dark fortnight one is Parama. In an ordinary year neither exists, so a reader coming to this page may have a wait of two or three years before the next. The panel above gives the date in a year that has one.<\/p>\n<h2>The mahatmya<\/h2>\n<p>The Padma Purana gives the story of Sumedha, a brahmana of Kampilya, and his wife Pavitra. They were poor to the point of having nothing to set before a guest, which in the terms of the story is the real hardship rather than hunger. The sage Kaundinya came to their house and told them to keep the ekadashi of the dark fortnight of the adhika masa with the five nights of observance that go with it, and the purana says their want came to an end. The same text says Kubera obtained his standing by this vrata.
