Shankaracharya reads it thus: as all the use of a well, for bathing and drinking, is contained in a flood of water on every side, so all the fruits of all the Vedic rites are contained in what the knower of Brahman has. A thirsty man standing at a great expanse of water takes only as much as he needs, not the whole of it.
