the Gita&#8217;s most important verses on the avatara. The answer to how the unborn can be born lies in two words, &#8216;prakriti&#8217; and &#8216;atma-maya&#8217;. The whole world is under its sway, and the soul deluded by it does not know Vasudeva, its own self. Here prakriti means one&#8217;s own nature. Without giving up any of his qualities, being unborn, imperishable and Lord of all, he is born in his own form and by his own will. On the authority of the Vedic lexicon he reads &#8216;maya&#8217; as &#8216;knowledge&#8217;, that is, his own resolve.
