Tradition holds that Shankara sang it as a young brahmachari at the door of a poor woman. The later verses are a string of salutations, and the last is the phalashruti. The young brahmachari Shankara came begging alms to the door of a poor house. The woman of the house had nothing to give except a single amalaka fruit, and she placed it, with some embarrassment, in his bowl. Moved by her poverty and her generosity, Shankara praised Lakshmi with this hymn, and tradition says a shower of golden amalakas fell on the house.
