The Nirvana Shatkam, also called the Atma Shatkam, is a short work of six verses. Each verse sets aside, one by one, the body, the senses, the mind, the emotions, ritual action and human ties, saying “I am not this, not that”. What remains at the end is the refrain “I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva, I am Shiva”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am not the mind, the intellect, the ego or the store of memory. I am not the ears, the tongue, the nose or the eyes. I am not space, earth, fire or air. I am Shiva, whose form is consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I am not what is called prana, nor the five vital airs. I am not the seven tissues of the body, nor the five sheaths beginning with the sheath of food. I am not the organs of action: speech, hands, feet, the organ of generation and the organ of excretion. I am Shiva, whose form is consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I have no hatred and no attachment, no greed and no delusion. I have no pride and no feeling of envy. Nor do the four aims of life, dharma, wealth, desire and liberation, belong to me. I am Shiva, whose form is consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I have no merit and no sin, no pleasure and no pain. Mantra, pilgrimage, the Vedas and sacrifices are not mine. I am not the act of eating, nor the food eaten, nor the one who eats.
