The king of the elephants was bathing with his herd in a lake on Mount Trikuta when a powerful crocodile seized his leg. In a struggle that lasted a thousand years the land animal slowly weakened while the crocodile, in its own element, grew stronger. Absorbed in silent meditation, he failed to welcome the sage Agastya and was cursed to be born as an elephant. The next chapter adds that the crocodile was Huhu, a gandharva cursed by the sage Devala. The word pashu here means both the elephant and the bound soul. He gives other blessings besides, and even an imperishable body. In the first verse Shuka sets the scene, verses 2 to 29 are Gajendra&#8217;s prayer, and verses 30 to 33 describe Hari&#8217;s arrival and the rescue. The prayer names no deity and describes no form, speaking of the Supreme in the language of the Upanishads, which is why in verse 30 the other gods do not come and Hari himself appears. Our meanings follow the commentary of Sridhara Svami.
