It was composed by the sixteenth-century poet Goswami Tulasidas. The later verses describe his form, with the Ganga, the moon, the serpent and the blue throat. In a former birth Bhushundi was a devotee of Shiva in Ujjain. When he insulted his own guru inside Shiva&#8217;s temple, Shiva cursed him. The gentle guru then sang this Rudrashtakam on behalf of his pupil and calmed Shiva, and Shiva softened the curse, so the story tells. He asked on behalf of the pupil who had insulted him. We see the same feeling in parents waiting outside an examination hall. They cannot know what is happening inside, and they cannot help.
