At the very start, because of past deeds, impurity takes hold of me as I lie in my mother’s womb. Amid excrement, urine and filth, the fire of the belly scorches me without pause. Who could ever describe each pain that torments me there? O Shiva, Shiva, Shiva, O great god Mahadeva, Shambhu, may my fault be forgiven.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
In childhood, from the excess of suffering, my body rolled in dirt and I thirsted for my mother’s milk. I had no control over my senses, and insects born of the grime of worldly life bit me. Overcome by crying from the pain of many ailments, I did not remember Shankara. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
When I grew up and came into youth, the five serpents of the sense objects bit me at my vital points. My discernment was lost and I sank into the pleasures of children, wealth and young women. Alas, my heart, mounted high on pride and vanity, had no thought of Shiva. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
In old age the working of my senses failed. Through the afflictions that come from the body, from the powers above and from other beings, through the illnesses that befell me and the loss of those close to me, my body wasted with troubles, and I became wretched and dull of understanding. Still my mind wanders in false delusion and longing, empty of meditation on Dhurjati. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
Having bathed at dawn, I did not bring Ganga water for your ritual bath. Not once did I bring whole bilva leaves from the deep forest for your worship. I did not bring for you a garland of lotuses blooming in the lake, nor sandal paste and flowers. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I never bathed the linga with milk mixed with honey and ghee, with curd and jaggery. I did not anoint it with sandal paste and the rest, nor worship it with flowers of gold. Nor did I offer incense, camphor lamps and food offerings of many flavours. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I could not perform the smarta rites, difficult at every step and full of the risk of fault if anything is missed. What then to speak of the shrauta rites laid down for the twice-born, which follow the path of the Veda? When the truth is not known through enquiry, what is there to contemplate after hearing and reflection? Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
With you, called Shiva, in my mind, I did not give generous wealth to brahmins. I did not pour oblations by the hundred thousand, with seed mantras, into the fire that is your mouth. I did no austerity on the bank of the Ganga with vows, japa and disciplines, nor did I chant the Rudra. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
Unclothed, pure through freedom from attachment, beyond the three gunas, the darkness of delusion gone, gaze fixed on the tip of the nose, knowing the nature of worldly life: never once did I behold you so. Or, never was I such a yogi. In the state beyond the mind, where its movement has ceased, I did not remember you, Shankara. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
Seated in the lotus posture, with the breath filled with Om held still in the subtle channel, when the calm inner mind dissolves, I did not remember Shankara, who dwells in all bodies: in that divine form called Shiva whose glory then shines forth, at the tip of the linga, in the great sayings of the Veda. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I did not remember Shankara, dear to the heart, to be known through Vedanta, shining in the lotus of the heart like a rising light, the truth, peace itself, known only within the lotus clusters of the minds of all sages, who stands beyond the three gunas through waking, dream and deep sleep. Shiva, forgive me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
On Shankara, whose crest shines with the moon, who destroyed Kama and bears the Ganga, whose neck and ears are adorned with serpents, from whose eye fire springs, who wears the elephant hide as a fine garment, on Hara, the essence of the three worlds: there, O mind, for the sake of liberation, settle your thoughts in purity. What use are other rites?<\/span><\/li>\n\n
What use are carriages, wealth, horses and elephants? What use is a kingdom won? What use are son, wife, friends, cattle, body and house? Knowing all this breaks in a moment, O mind, let it go far from you at once. For your own true good, as the guru teaches, worship, worship the beloved of Parvati.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
The trade of a hired priest, a life of roaming by night, the headship of a village, service under another’s command, the running of a monastery, lying, false witness, living on others’ food, hatred of the Veda or of brahmins, delight in the company of the wicked, cruelty to living beings: Pashupati, may none of these be mine in any birth.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
Life wastes away even as we watch, and youth declines day by day. Days that are gone do not return, and time devours the world. Fortune is fickle as a breaking wave, and life is as brief as lightning. So protect me now with compassion, protect me, for I have come to you for refuge.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
I bow to the god who is Uma’s lord and teacher of the gods, I bow to the cause of the world. I bow to him who wears serpents as ornaments and holds a deer, to the lord of all beings. I bow to him whose eyes are the sun, the moon and fire, to him who is dear to Mukunda, to the refuge of devotees and giver of boons, to Shiva, Shankara.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
His body is white with ash, his smile is white, the skull in his hand is white, the khatvanga staff is white, the bull is white, and the rings in his ears are white. Pashupati’s matted hair is white with the foam of the Ganga, and the moon on his head is white. May he who is white in everything always grant prosperity and the end of sin.<\/span><\/li>\n\n
Whatever fault I have committed with hands or feet, born of speech or body or of action, through ears or eyes, or in the mind, whether in what is enjoined or in what is forbidden: forgive all of it. O Shiva, Shiva, ocean of compassion, great god Mahadeva, Shambhu.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
