It begins on the first day of the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, when the sun enters Vrischika, and runs for forty-one days to the Mandala Puja. It is also the period in which pilgrims from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka keep the Ayyappa vratam, and in the weeks before it the black clothes and the mala begin to appear in every town in the South, Udupi included.<\/p>\n<h2>When it falls<\/h2>\n<p>The season is counted from a <a href=\"\/anudina-sankranti\/\">sankranti<\/a>, not a tithi, so it falls on nearly the same Gregorian date every year: the 16th or 17th of November. A <em>mandala<\/em> is a period of forty-one days, and the Mandala Puja is held on the forty-first, in the last week of December, usually on the 26th or 27th.<\/p>\n<p>Kerala&#8217;s solar calendar has its own rule for which day a month begins when the sankranti falls late in the day, and the Travancore Devaswom Board announces the opening and the Mandala Puja date each year. Anudina begins the season on the day it shows Vrischika Sankranti, which in most years is the same day. Where the two differ, the temple&#8217;s notice is the one pilgrims follow.<\/p>\n<h2>The vratam<\/h2>\n<p>A pilgrim, called a <em>swami<\/em> or, on a first pilgrimage, a <em>kanni swami<\/em>, begins the vratam by putting on a mala of tulasi or rudraksha beads, usually from the hands of a guru swami who has made the pilgrimage many times. The traditional length is forty-one days, one mandala, and many begin on the first day of the season; others time it to end on the day they climb. For as long as the mala is worn the rules are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>black, dark blue or saffron clothes;<\/li>\n<li>celibacy, and a vegetarian diet without alcohol or tobacco;<\/li>\n<li>a bath and prayer morning and evening, often a cold bath;<\/li>\n<li>no cutting of hair or shaving, and in many groups walking barefoot and sleeping on the floor;<\/li>\n<li>every other person addressed as swami, and every other pilgrim treated as Ayyappa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before setting out the pilgrim ties the <em>irumudi<\/em>, the two-part bundle carried on the head, one part holding the offering of a coconut filled with ghee and the other the provisions for the journey. Only those carrying it climb the eighteen steps, the Pathinettam Padi, to the sanctum.<\/p>\n<h2>Mandala Puja and Makaravilakku<\/h2>\n<p>The Mandala Puja on the forty-first day closes the first part of the season, and the temple shuts for a few days. It opens again at the end of December for the Makaravilakku season, which reaches its height on Makara Sankranti in January, when the Makarajyoti is seen across the valley on Ponnambalamedu and the pilgrims fill the hillside to watch for it. The temple closes a few days later. Between them the two seasons cover the whole of Dhanurmasa, from <a href=\"\/anudina-dhanurmasa-begins\/\">its beginning<\/a> to <a href=\"\/anudina-dhanurmasa-ends\/\">its end<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mala is removed after the pilgrim returns, with a puja at home or at the temple where it was put on.
