On it the <em>dauhitra<\/em>, the son of a daughter, offers shraddha to his <em>matamaha<\/em>, his mother&#8217;s father. It is also called Matamaha Shraddha. It is the same day on which <a href=\"\/anudina-navaratri-begins\/\">Navaratri<\/a> begins, and the two are kept together, the one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<h2>Why a separate day<\/h2>\n<p>A shraddha is normally performed by a son for his own father&#8217;s line, and the texts are strict that a man whose father is living does not perform shraddha or tila tarpana for the ancestors: that duty is still his father&#8217;s. The mother&#8217;s father has sons of his own, who offer for him. On both counts a daughter&#8217;s son would ordinarily have no place.<\/p>\n<p>Dauhitra Pratipada is the exception made for him. The Dharmasindhu states that on the pratipada of bright Ashvayuja the daughter&#8217;s son should perform shraddha to his maternal grandfather, with pinda, even though his own father is alive, and in addition to the yearly rite. The maternal uncles being alive does not prevent it either. The dauhitra is held in the tradition to be especially dear to the pitrs of his mother&#8217;s line, and this is the day given to that bond.<\/p>\n<h2>Who keeps it<\/h2>\n<p>The conditions, as they are usually stated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the maternal grandfather has died;<\/li>\n<li>the performer is his daughter&#8217;s son;<\/li>\n<li>it is done even if the performer&#8217;s father is living, and this is the case the day exists for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Practice varies at the edges, and a family should follow its own purohita. Many hold that the day matters chiefly to a dauhitra whose father is living, since one whose father has died already includes his mother&#8217;s line in his own Mahalaya shraddha; others keep it in both cases. On the pinda there are two usages. The Dharmasindhu allows pinda. Other manuals, including guidance followed in Madhva households, hold that a man whose father is living should not offer pinda, and prescribe a <em>sankalpa<\/em> shraddha without it, with the feeding of a brahmana or a gift of provisions. Manuals also differ on whether the maternal grandmother and the generations above the grandfather are included on this day.<\/p>\n<h2>When it falls<\/h2>\n<p>Because it is a shraddha, it follows the afternoon rule. The daylight is divided into five equal parts and the fourth, the aparahna, is the time for the rite; the day that carries Dauhitra Pratipada is the one on which pratipada is running in that window. Navaratri, by contrast, begins on the day pratipada is current at sunrise. In most years this is the same day. When pratipada begins late in the morning, the two can separate, and a calendar that simply prints Navaratri may then be a day away from the correct day for the shraddha. Anudina marks it by the aparahna.<\/p>\n<h2>How it is kept<\/h2>\n<p>The dauhitra fasts until the rite is done, performs it in the afternoon with tila tarpana and, where his usage allows, pindas, and feeds or honours a brahmana. In a household where the kalasha for Navaratri has been set up in the morning, the shraddha is done apart from it.
